My February reading list:

Finished -

Currently Reading -

  1. "SUPERSTITION" by Karen Robards (unabridged Audio CD book) (A+) Pauleys Island, South Carolina. Sunny, idyllic and picture-perfect, until a tabloid news program airs a splashy segment about the community's only unsolved murder - the grisly stabbing of teenager Tara Mitchell and the subsequent disappearance of her two best friends, now thought to be long dead. In the years since the murders, several families have moved into the mansion where the crime occurred, each claiming that the dead girls still haunt the house. Beautiful redheaded reporter Nicole Sullivan, sensing the story could be her big break, arranges for her mother, a renowned psychic, to contact the three victims in a live séance on the show Twenty-four Hours Investigates. But something goes terribly wrong during the segment, and a young woman is murdered in the same manner as Tara Mitchell was fifteen years earlier. Pressured by her producers to get the inside story, Nicole continues to investigate. As an attraction grows between her and Police Chief Joe Franconi, another identical murder occurs, and a menacing warning is delivered that the original killer is back to claim three more lives. The body count rises, and so does the danger to Nicole, who is attacked, barely escaping with her life. She and Joe must team up, as it becomes clear that the killer has set his sights on her as his next victim.

  2. "LARGER THAN LIFE" by Kay Hooper (A-) What makes Saber Duncan sing with such passion? Her sensual voice moves women to tears and makes men want to go out and slay dragons to get close to her. Yet a few years ago this budding superstar was just another lightweight pop diva. So what changed? As her would-be biographer Travis Foxx embarks on a quest to uncover the painful secret in Saber's past, a mutual attraction intensifies. But he finds himself blocked at every turn by the walls she has thrown up to guard herself from outsiders. On a visit to her friend's Arizona hideaway for some much-needed R&R, Saber finds her carefully constructed defenses crumbling as the bonds of trust begin to form between her and the headstrong, persistent Travis. But will the arrival of a mysterious man from Saber's former life wreck the new one they hope to build together? Sometimes starting over means revealing everything about your past.

  3. "THE LOST" by J.D. Robb, Patricia Gaffney, Mary Blayney & Ruth Ryan Langan - Missing in Death by J.D. Robb - I didn't read this story since I'd already listened to it on an audio cassette and hadn't cared for it. The Dog Days of Laurie Summer by Patricia Gaffney (A) After recovering from a severe accident, a woman awakens to a world as familiar as it is strange and unsettling. Lost in Paradise by Mary Blayney (B) A man cursed to stay behind the walls of an island fortress finds hope in a nurse who's shipwrecked and in possession of the one thing that could set him free. Legacy by Ruth Ryan Langan (A) In the wake of her mother's death, a young woman's travels unearth a family secret buried on the grounds of a magnificent but imposing Irish estate.

  4. "ABOVE AND BEYOND" by Sandra Brown (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A+) The letters Kyla sent to her husband, Sergeant Richard Stroud, stationed a world away, spoke of a love that stretched across the ocean and held the young couple together. But when tragedy ended their marriage too soon, Kyla was left a widow with a newborn son. And Richard left behind only a metal box filled with his wife's declarations of love. Trevor Rule had been Richard's best friend. Returning home from military duty, he carried with him the letters Kyla had sent. And with each one he read, he fell more in love with the gentle, passionate woman who had penned them. Now he needs to convince Kyla of his feelings, and that they both have the right to be happy, to move past the tragedy of Richard's death. But Trevor is harboring a secret, one with the power to destroy the love he is trying so hard to protect.

  5. "TWO FOR THE DOUGH" Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum #2) (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) Stephanie Plum once again takes to the mean streets of Trenton, armed with attitude (not to mention stun guns, defense sprays, killer flashlights, and her untrustworthy .38) to find Kenny Mancuso, who recently left the army, inadvertently shot his best friend, and is on the run in violation of a bond. Aided by her tough bounty hunter coach and her irrepressible Grandma Mazur, Stephanie again forms a risky alliance with fast talking, slow-handed vice cop Joe Morelli for the tumultuous chase through back allies and Grandma's favorite funeral parlors.

  6. "WHISPERS AT MIDNIGHT" by Karen Robards (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) Carly Linton is hell-bent on starting over. After a bruising divorce, she moves back to her tiny hometown of Benton, Georgia to start up a bed and breakfast in the old house she inherited from her grandmother. The whole town remembers her as the proverbial good girl, but Carly is tired of being good - she's ready to walk on the wild side, and she knows exactly where she wants to start. Matt Converse, the town's former bad boy, is now the local sheriff and a pillar of the community. But he hasn't forgotten his wild days, or that magical night of the senior prom he shared with Carly years ago. When Carly's dog unearths a dead body on her property, Matt is forced to spend time there, and Carly decides to use her newfound wiles to seduce him. But when someone breaks into Carly's house and tries to take her away. Matt is the only person who can protect her from a mysterious enemy who's making it all too clear that Carly should never have come back to Benton.

  7. "ENCHANTED AFTERNOON" by Susan Wiggs (A) Beautiful, charming and respected as the wife of an ambitious senator, Helena Cabot Barnes is the leading lady of Saratoga Springs. But beneath the facade lies a terrible deception. Helena married for all the wrong reasons - and discovered too late that her husband is a dangerous man. Fearing for her safety, she ends her marriage and flees to legendary Moon Lake Lodge, where she creates a refuge for other women in need of a safe haven. And there she finds the courage within to become the woman she was meant to be. But Helena can't outrun her past. In desperation, she turns to Michael Rowan, a man she once loved, a man who broke her heart. A brilliant inventor, Michael is still ruggedly handsome, still defiantly unconventional. For Helena, the road to trusting Michael again is long and hard. And danger lies ahead. But Michael has just discovered a shattering truth...and a reason to stay and fight for the woman he once lost.

  8. "THREE TO GET DEADLY" by Janet Evanovich (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) Stephanie Plum, the brassy babe in the powder blue Buick, is back, and she's having a bad hair day - for the whole month of January. For starters, she's been given the unpopular task of finding Mo Bedemier - one of the burg's most beloved figures, who unfortunately was caught carrying concealed. Steph's job is to haul his revered ass back to the lock-up and collect her share of the bounty. But Mo seems to have skipped town. His car is gone, his ice cream store is deserted and his neighbors aren't talking, certainly not to Stephanie. Trenton homicide cop and local hunk, Joe Morelli is keeping his distance. The last time he got social with Stephanie he ended up naked in the middle of the street. But Stephanie's not one to say no to a challenge, whether she's after a Mo or a Morelli....With lots of help from former "ho" turned file clerk, Lula, and the occasional assist from the ultimate of bounty hunters, Ranger, Stephanie packs her pepper spray and takes off in persuit of the elusive purveyor of sweets.

  9. "NIGHT WHISPERS" by Judith McNaught (abridged Audio Cassette book) (B) The heady social whirls of San Francisco and Palm Beach are utterly foreign to Sloan Reynolds, a dedicated policewoman in a small Florida community. As a child, Sloan was aware that the small-town life she shared with her divorced mother was a long way from the world of privilege inhabited by her socialite father and her elegant sister, Paris. Yet Sloan dreamed secretly of being reunited with the family she'd never known. Total strangers to her, they have never tried to contact Sloan - until her father's heart attack is followed by a sudden invitation to meet him and Paris, and indulge in the Palm Beach social season. Unmoved by his long-overdue parental gesture, Sloan ignores the request, until FBI agent Paul Richardson informs her that her father is being investigated for fraud, conspiracy, and murder. Richardson persuades her to accept her father's invitation and to bring him along as her "significant other." Sloan's on top of the game, until she meets Noah Maitland, a powerfully attractive multinational corporate player, and one of the FBI's prime suspects. Instantly, she senses that he is the kind of man she is most afraid of wanting, let alone loving. As Sloan's respect for justice and her growing trust in Paul Richardson battle with the deepest instincts of her heart, she must maneuver through a web of deceit and passion, hope and fear, to decipher the meaning behind her nightmares, and the truth behind those terrifying whispers in the dark.

  10. "KEEPER OF THE LIGHT" by Diane Chamberlain (Keeper of the Light trilogy #1) (A++) Three people - one obsession...Christmas night on North Carolina's Outer Banks - a gunshot victim is brought into the emergency room where Dr. Olivia Simon is on duty. Midway through surgery, Olivia learns that the person whose heart she literally holds in her hands is Annie O'Neill, the woman with whom her husband, Paul, is in love. Annie - known as Saint Anne for unending good works - does not survive, and for the three people who idealize her, the death has a devastating impact. To her husband Alec, Annie was the perfect wife and mother. To Paul she was everything he always wanted. And to Olivia she was a rival to be emulated. Joined together not only by their obsessions with Annie, but by an effort to preserve the Kiss River Lighthouse, the three are soon caught up in a whirlwind of love, passion, and deception that could destroy their lives. Only one person - the keeper of the light - can help them...the one person who knows a shocking truth that has the power to set them free.

  11. "PARADISE COUNTY" by Karen Robards (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A-) Shelby County is home to some of the finest horseflesh and bluest blood in Kentucky. With its rural beauty and tranquil lifestyle, it is easy to see why the locals call it Paradise County. But beneath the serene exterior lies a dark underside, and an evil that threatens everyone who touches it. Alexandra Haywood and her sister Neely have always loved Whistledown, the family's Shelby County horse farm. After their billionaire father's sudden and tragic death, Alex returns to find the family fortune in shambles, and Whistledown has to go. But Joe Welch, the sexy farm manager, refuses to cooperate. Sparks of rage give way to a fiery attraction when Joe and Alex meet head-on. But just as a volatile passion flares between, the discovery of a shocking murder with ties to the past rocks the county - and cuts frighteningly close to home when Joe's son Eli and Neely disappear. Alex and Joe have only each other to rely on as they search frantically for their loved ones. What they don't know is that they are racing against time, too. Because the evil that lurks beneath the bucolic surface of Paradise County has once again raised its gruesome head - and now Alex is targeted as the next victim.

  12. "FOUR TO SCORE" by Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum #4) (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) Trenton, New Jersey's sexiest, smartest bounty hunter strikes - and is struck - again! Working for her bail-bondsman cousin Vinnie, sassy, savvy, smart-mouthed bounty hunter Stephanie Plum this time finds herself hot on the trail of revenge-seeking waitress Maxine Nowicki, whose crimes include bail jumping, theft, and extortion. Someone is terrifying Maxine's friends, and those who have seen her are turning up dead. Also on the hunt for Maxine is Joyce Barnhardt, Stephanie's archenemy and rival bounty hunter. Stephanie's attitude never wavers, even when helped (and sometimes hindered) by a posse that includes her seventy-three-year-old crazy Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker and wannabe bounty hunter Lula, and towering transvestite rock musician Sally Sweet - and even when Stephanie makes an enemy whose deadly tactics escalate from threatening messages to firebombs. All of this pales in comparison, though, with an even greater danger Stephanie faces when, homeless and broke, she and her hamster, Rex, move in with sexy vice cop Joe Morelli.

  13. "FORBIDDEN FALLS" by Robyn Carr (Virgin River series #8) (A) Virgin River is abuzz with the news that a stranger bought the town's abandoned church on ebay. The buyer, a young widowed reverend, is a little like the building itself: in need of some loving care. Noah Kincaid arrives ready to roll up his sleeves and revitalize his new purchase, but he's going to need some help. An ad in the local paper brings an improbable candidate his way. "Pastor's assistant" is not a phrase that springs to mind when Noah meets brassy, beautiful Ellie Baldwin. With her colorful clothes and even more colorful past, Ellie needs a respectable job so she can regain custody of her children. Noah can't help but admire her spunk and determination, and she may just be the breath of fresh air he needs. This unlikely duo may come from two different worlds, but they have more in common than anyone would have expected. And in Virgin River lasting happiness is never out of the question.

  14. "GHOST MOON" by Karen Robards (A+) Nine years after leaving in disgrace, Olivia Morrison is coming home again with her eight-year-old, Sara, to put things right with the Archer clan. But there is no welcome for the prodigal daughter at the lavish Louisiana estate. Her step cousin, Seth, once her only comfort, is icy, dangerously attractive - and engaged. Her formidable step grandfather collapses with a heart attack at the sight of her, gasping her dead mother's name: "Selena!" The bayou echoes with memories of her mother's mysterious death. Suicide by drowning, they said. But Olivia's terrifying nightmares suggest another story. She is determined to learn the truth, and to face a newly ignited passion for Seth, who is too close for comfort, despite his vows. When a new danger threatens her and her daughter, Olivia must find the courage to confront her old demons...and uncover a shocking secret buried in the long-forgotten past.

  15. "HIGH FIVE" by Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum #5) (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) Half Hungarian, half Italian, and all Jersey, smart, sassy Stephanie Plum is at it again in a raucous, all-new adventure! Out of bail skippers and rent money, Stephanie throws caution to the wind and follows in the entrepreneurial bootsteps of Super Bounty Hunter Ranger, engaging in morally correct and marginally legal enterprises. Okay, so a scumball blows himself to smithereens on her first day of policing a crack house, and the sheik she was chauffeuring steals the limo. Hey, nobody's perfect. Besides, Stephanie has other things on her find. Her mother wants her to find Uncle Fred, who's missing after arguing with his garbage company. Homicidal rapist Benito Ramirez is back, quoting scripture and stalking Stephanie. Joe Morelli, the sexiest vice cop in Trenton, New Jersey, has a box of condoms with Stephanie's name on it. And Stephanie's afraid Ranger has his finger on her trigger. In other words: the star of the best-selling Stephanie Plum novels is back (along with some of her outrageous sidekicks and hangers-on) for another round of mirth, mayhem, and murder - Stephanie Plum style!

  16. "SEALED WITH A PROMISE" by Margret Daughtridge (SEALed #2) (A++) He'll do anything to move the mission forward, no matter the cost...Navy SEAL Caleb Delaude is deadly charming. When he discovers that professor Emmie Caddington's personal connections can help him get the dirty work done, he sets out to win her over. But her quick intelligence and quirky personality sure do start to get under his skin. She may just be the key to his salvation...Emmie's smart and independent and isn't looking for a brawny guy to take over her life. But this rugged Navy SEAL, who seems so determined to get close to her, hides a fierce intelligence and deep sensitivity. When plans go wrong and a child's life is on the line, Emmie learns what it means to be a SEAL in action, and Caleb discovers that even a hero can get hurt sometimes.

  17. "ONE LAST LOOK" by Linda Lael Miller (A-) Carrying her lover Tony Sonterra's child, Clare Westbrook has finally buried her commitment phobia and said "yes" to Tony's marriage proposal. So why is fear running through her veins and haunting her dreams? Sonterra is fired up to leave Phoenix for small-town Arizona, to target a lethal desert crime ring. Clare's willing to stand by her man, but he won't be the only one flirting with danger on the job: as a special investigator for the D.A.'s office, Clare is plunged into a race to find a missing child whose mother was murdered. And on a case this hot, the promise of Clare's bright future could vanish in the blink of an eye.

  18. "HOT SIX" Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum #6) (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A) "Nice dress. Take it off." - That was the last thing Stephanie Plum heard on her previous adventure. Now, for those of you who've been waiting with bated breath to find out who said those enticing words to Trenton, New Jersey's sexiest, sassiest, smartest bounty hunter, your wait is nearly over. It was...but first, did we mention that Super Bounty Hunter Ranger is implicated in a murder and goes on the lam, and Stephanie has to team up with her old/new/old/new flame, vice cop Joe Morelli, to find Ranger? And crazy Grandma Mazur moves in with Stephanie, but only on an interim basis. What Grandma really wants is to get her own apartment and learn how to drive. Frightening thought. And then there's the gonzo golden retriever Stephanie is asked to dog-sit, also on an interim basis, except the owner never intends to reclaim the dog. And, of course, this mélange also contains the requisite ration of donuts and a few weird FTA (Failure to Appear) assignments from cousin Vinnie. Hey, a girl's got to eat and make a living! Oh, and in answer to the burning question. Who was he?...You'll find out about two minutes into this story.

  19. "ANGEL'S PEAK" by Robyn Carr (Virgin River series #9) (A++) Sean has settled down in spite of himself - he's not the cocky young fighter pilot he was when Franci left, and he wants them to try again. After all, they have a history...but that's not all they share. Franci's secret reason for walking away when Sean refused to commit is now three and a half, a redheaded cherub names Rosie who shares her daddy's emerald green eyes. Sean is stunned - and furious with Franci for the deception. News travels fast in Virgin River, and soon the whole town is taking sides. Rebuilding their trust could take a small miracle - and the kind of love that can move mountains.

  20. "CHAIN LIGHTNING" by Elizabeth Lowell (abridged Audio Cassette book) (A+) Australia's Great Barrier Reef. A place of fiery beauty and fathomless mystery, where passions can be lured into uncharted depths. For Damon Sutter it was a chance to escape from civilization - alone. The rugged adventurer's humanitarian crusades had taken him to the darkest places on earth, and the darkest places in himself. Now all he wanted was a vacation. But for Mandy Blythe, the unexpected trip was a journey into her own dark past. Stranded with a man whose strength challenged her own painful vulnerabilities, paradise had become a nightmare. With emotions running as deep as the ocean that surrounded them, how long could temptation be ignored...and love be denied?

  21. "MOONLIGHT ROAD" by Robyn Carr (Virgin River series #10) (A++) With her beloved younger siblings settled and happy, Erin Foley has empty nest syndrome. At age thirty-five. So she's hitting the pause button on her life and holing up in a secluded (but totally upgraded - she's not into roughing it) cabin near Virgin River. Erin is planning on getting to know herself...not the shaggy-haired mountain man she meets. In fact, beneath his faded fatigues and bushy beard, Aiden Riordan is a doctor, recharging for a summer after leaving the navy. He's intrigued by the pretty, slightly snooty refugee from the rat race - her meditating and journaling are definitely keeping him at arm's length. He'd love to get closer, if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife don't hold him back. But maybe it's something in the water - unlikely romances seem to take root in Virgin River...helped along by some well-intentioned meddling, of course.

I restarted (I didn't get very far the first time) Signora da Vinci by Robin Maxwell.   I knocked off about 50 pages tonight and it's turning into a pretty good story.

Currently reading:  TheWeight of Heaven by Thrity Umrigar

Finished:    Echoes From the Dead by Johan Theorin. Scandinavian crime fiction.. This is my first time reading this author. Highly recommend

The Darkest Room by Johan Theorin. Second in the series, I did not enjoy it as much as the first.

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. I thought that  "True Colors" was a very well written and thoroughly enjoyable book, but, despite good reviews from her long term fans, I found this one very disappointing.

Severed by Simon Kernick. A British police procedural that has plenty of twists and turns. Quite the page turner, I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

Dead Simple and Looking Good Dead by Peter James. Books 1 and 2 in a British police procedural series featuring Dectective Superintendent  Roy Grace are extremely well written thrillers. Great characters and setting. Peter James is my new favorite writer and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Two big thumbs up!

Up next:

The Secret Keepers by Mindy Freedle

                Don't Move by Margaret Mazzantini

The Second Virgin Birth by Tommy Taylor

The Reach of a Chef by Michael Ruhlman

The Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell

Ooh, Barbara, The Cowboy and the Cossack is one of my all-time favorites.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I'm currently reading Dear American Airlines by Jonathan Miles.  It's hilarious.  A man is stranded in an airport, fuming because he is certain to miss his daughter's wedding, so he writes a scathing letter to the airline about that and everything else wrong in his life.  I laugh out loud on nearly every page, in between being moved and heart broken for him.  A very good read so far.

I'm catching up on the books my students are reading (I teach middle school). I finished the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Hunger Games, The Giver (for about the 5th time). Now I'm reading Catching Fire and The Lightning Thief is next. I wish there wasn't such a long wait for that one!

Anyone have any other good young adult novels to recommend? Looking for newer ones, not classics at this point...

Currently going back-&-forth between two l-o-o-o-ng ones:
--Stephen King's Under the Dome
--Roberto Bolaño's 2666

The former is more fun, but the latter is brilliant and even funny. I didn't expect 2666 to be so funny, as in discussing which of two male lovers this one female character thought superior in bed, with the opening line: "Viewed from outside, say from a rigorously academic standpoint, one could maintain that Pelletier had a longer bibliography." [than the other lover...] And then, with a straight face, going on to tell us all about his *bibliography*...sort of...  more like a biblio of lovers.

Fi

P.S. Oh no! I just realized I said "going back-&-forth between two l-o-o-o-ng ones..."!! =huge laugh=
