The manufacturing industry has the capability to act aggressively to produce components, devices, and systems for modern health care in accord with good business practices. To be successful, industry must (with the help of the "agency") have the ability to: Adequately define a product that will satisfy the majority of potential users. Introduce a product with a reasonable assur- ance that the time from design to market ac- ceptance will not be prohibitively long. Forecast a market need. Produce a product in a sufficiently large quantity, and plan the inventory require- ments so that the sales price will provide a profit and an adequate return on invest- ment. The user in the health care industry wants these new products, providing: They are an adequate substitute for man- power and/or they improve on current procedure. The product is not an additional burden to the staff and does not complicate further their working habits and relations. The acquisition and utilization of the prod- uct saves money and/or time for the hos- pital or health professional. Medical applications are attractive and challenging to the persons and companies who are interested in the advancement of technology.
