We just moved to midtown, Ga . I have looked on various sites and contacted the homeschool groups listed. Many responded, but are hours away from us, not active, or wrong age group for my 6th grader. Any suggestions? Where we moved from my son was active with a group of his peers , so I am looking to find a group here also.  Driving 2hrs. to meet a group is not practical for me right now. I would appreciate any suggestions and prayers for us. Please pray that God will lead us to a homeschool group where we can build good christian relationships with parents and children his age.

Thanks

I can understand your frustration. I joined our group at the end of last year and have found that unless you know someone else who home schools the groups aren't that public. Not because they don't want to be, but because their focus is not on being found, but keeping the group going, supporting their group and their families. I am trying to increase our status online, but it is hard; and this is increasingly where people are looking. I will pray for you and wish you all the best in your search and hope you can feel some support from the online community of home schoolers.

Thank you. That is a very good point, especially since some areas do not seem to be very homeschool friendly.

Thank you and I appreciated your prayers.

Have you looked into 4h? Sign ups are going on right now and we opted to sign up for 4h (our group is made up of homeschoolers) instead of joining the local homeschool group.

Your library might know of some local homeschoolers.

(HUGS) here, my son is in 6th, so I can sympathize.

Can relate to that situation. We moved to a new area, four hours from our previous home, a few months ago and have had no luck locating a homeschool group. There seems to be one in the area that is fairly large, but they require that you are a member of their church and that is just not happening with us.

I may look into 4H option ourselves. We opted to register son for several classes at the local YMCA as well, at least for time being until we can find something that works with our family.

Best wishes to you on finding a group! Our son is in 4th grade, and it tears me up that he went from a large social group/circle to nothing overnight.

I moved from an area with tons of homeschoolers to an area with maybe 30 homeschooling families.  When we moved here, I asked around a lot at the library and at churches and finally was invited to the park by two homeschool families.  Unfortunately it will probably take a lot of work on your park to squeeze into the already established (or seemingly non-existant) homeschool groups.  I have found 4H and AWANAS at the large local church to be a great place to find other homeschool families.  Upwards sports (usually hosted by a church) is another great option.  After I found a few homeschool families, I actively pursued arranging park play dates, dinners over at our house, etc.  I started a weekly co-op and a yahoo group for local homeschool families.  I feel like I barely have my foot in the door, but we're might slight progress by baby steps.  I will pray for you! I know it's unfortunately harder than it should be.

Theresa, I live in GA as well. You might want to check out Homeschoolclassifieds.com There you will find lots of activities and the names of many homeschool groups. There may be one closer to you. I am not in a group any longer but was blessed to be involved for about 22 years of the 25 we have homeschooled. You might also want to contact HSLDA. They may be able to tell you of a group close by. Homeschooling is always an adventure but one I'm glad we didn't miss. Now our oldest son and his wife are homeschooling. Persevere and you will be blessed.
