Fell had dropped out of his fancy prep school, but he is drawn back into a mystery of kidnapping, murder, disguise, and obsession. Alternating with Fell's first person story is a ventriloquist telling his story in the voice of his alter-ego, his dummy. As the two stories come together, the parallels and coverups in plot, charachter, and language are dazzlingly clever. Kerr's the most acute social observer in YA fiction and here she mixes the world weariness of The Great Gatsby with the bizzare revelations of Twin Peaks...a Brilliant mystery - ALA Booklist
