This was my 2nd book by Katsu. I've read The Hunger and thought it mediocre. Wasn't expecting much out of this one. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised. It was set back in the 1940's during WWII when internment camps were created for the Japanese in America. This story also blends in the history of the Fu-Go bombs deployed by Japan. Mix that with a little paranormal and it has the right blend of action, emotions and great story telling. The book flowed smoothly but a bit after the halfway point, it really took off. There was a few stagnant parts that had me skimming but for most part, it was a joy to read. I especially liked the author's note at the end. It is something, we as Americans, really need to take into account. We cannot punish one for other's misgivings. We've done that throughout history with 9-11, Covid, and so on. It is really a sad spectacle to see.
