Hello,

Before I get to my question, I need to give some brief background information. First of all, I'm a university student who is going for a B.A. in English. I'm not going into education, as I have other pursuits I'm going to look into.

Recently, one of  my sister's co-workers got wind about my university-student status and the English degree, etc. She asked my sister if I was interested in privately tutoring her 10-year-old daughter. Despite the fact that I told the mother that I'm not a teacher, nor do I have any kind of teaching experience whatsoever, she still wanted me to work with her daughter. Mainly she wants me to work with her on formal essay composition.

Okay so yesterday I met with the mother to do a trial session with the girl. I think it went all right, considering we were meeting for the first time and I was also attempting to impart some knowledge.

What I'm hoping someone can assist me with is tips and tricks. Is there a website or a book I can purchase that offers quick, ready-made assignments or quizzes to prepare a ten-year-old for formal essay writing? Are there any articles that offer sage advice?

Any information is appreciated. As I mentioned, I'm merely a college student that is eager to help someone learn the art of writing formal essays. I've been doing it for so long that it comes almost naturally to me. I know what makes up an essay, but toning down my speech for a youngster to understand is hard work!

If anyone wishes to help, send me a PM. I'll say thanks in advance. And God bless teachers everywhere!

Natalie

This is a link ot Hawaii's writing standards - http://www.hcps.k12.hi.us/PUBLIC/contst1.nsf/2be12f699cdba2840a2567830069239d/fbc32f9bf7fcc6bd0a2567e000146fc7/$FILE/Language%20Arts%20Booklet.pdf  This is the main site http://doe.k12.hi.us/  I didn't explore it too much, but you might find some information there, in addition to other links.  This will give you an idea of what her teachers will be looking for.

I use 6 Trait Writing with my students.  If you google it, you get all kinds of information on writing.

Good luck!
