This was a good and well-written book that was almost overwhelmed by its length and excessive detail. There were effective characters--Harper was a constant, pleasant surprise--and an interesting premise, but way too many pages. I kept going because I needed to know how things worked out, and Hill did eventually make it worth my while. He certainly surprised me more than once along the way. There was blood and profanity and cruelty, along with more mysticism and 80's rock than I could ever need, but also a great deal of humanity, courage, and humor. I think this is probably Hill's best to date.

This was quite a riveting story and I really enjoyed it. I became a fan of Hill with Heart Shaped Box and that is still a favorite. While I have enjoyed all of his books, it seems to me he resorts to the gimmicks of his dear old Dad (which drive me crazy) more in each book. Despite some eye rolling, over the top parts, it is well done and entertaining. I hope he will write more with his own style and voice in the future.
