First Corinthians Author:G.Coleman Luck Like all institutions and organizations that owe their birth to Mr. D. L. Moody, The Bible Institute Colportage Association (now known as Moody Press) grew out of a need that he felt and observed as traveled to and fro in his evangelist work. — It was in 1894 that his investigations revealed that although the book stores were loaded with fiction ... more »and, in some cases, very expensively bound religious books, it was impossible to procure a single cheap religious book.
Mr. Moody consulted with publishers, but his proposals received a cold welcome. The only way to reduce the price would be by printing large editions and no publisher was willing to take the risk in the absence of any special demand.
As a result, Mr. Moody organized a colportage department in connection with the Bible Institute with the following objectives: (1) popular, readable style; (2) well-known authors, or books of existing reputation; (3) strictly evangelical and nondenominational; (4) good workmanship; (5) low price.
The Moody Colportage Library books have sold in the millions of copies. Sermons, addresses, biographies, prayer, missions, Bible study, gospel stories, better Christian life, Christian workers and children's books.« less
