The following day was Sunday. Morning was bright across the prairie before the pioneer community was astir. The weather continued beautiful and the sun shone in full blaze over the wide stretches on either hand. Along in the afternoon Frans went out walking and encountered Thor Engh and Bernt Aasen. A desire to look about had prompted him forth, and before he knew he was in company with two friends of last evening. "How do you do! -- Well -- glad to see you !" "We too," exclaimed Thor; "and we were just on the way to find you." "Oh, I got tired of staying in," answered Frans, pondering apparently what the two wanted with him -- "Let's take a walk to the house." "That's not necessary, now that we met you here." Thor looked meditatively into the distance. For a brief moment his glance rested upon the countenance of the other. "You know we've been saying of late that a couple of us ought to take a trip to town before winter. But now the trouble is with Erling Bro- vaag. Bernt had a talk with him last night, and then he said he wasn't interested in a trip to town, for he hadn't a cent, unless the money he loaned out down in Wisconsin were to come. If not, he'llhave to do something about it. There is nothing to earn here, and so he would have to go away." Thor paused, and again threw a keen glance at Frans. "His money all gone, you say!"
