(Back cover) It was dark before Hildy Corrigan left the mansion of Matthew Farnham, Lone River's cattleman-banker. His surprising offer to hire Hildy to care for his two small children on the streamline train from Sacramento to St. Louis occupied her mind--until she realized she was being followed! Dangers Hildy thought they'd left in the past suddenly return.

Suspicions finally prove true as her nemesis, Vester Hardesty, is clearly spotted. Granny Dunnigan has scared the superstitious mountaineer into finding Hildy and forcing her to return to live with Granny in the backwoods of the Ozarks.

Hildy decides to take the banker's offer and travel on to Granny Dunnigan's in hope of being reconciled. Ruby Konning and her father join Hildy in the journey, but Vester is closing in!
