I liked this book very much. Taking place during the Great Depression of 1931, it is the tale of a race across the country from Los Angeles to New York. The characters worm their way into your heart as they face challenge after challenge to continue. From the heat of the Mojave to the snow and cold of the mountains, the runners struggle to keep going. The promoter of the race, Charles Flanagan, finds the race funding eroding as the runners get closer and closer to their destination. From a Minsky dancer, to a miner strike organizer who loses his wife to a Scottish runner who has nothing to gain but funds to survive, from a man who has always wanted to win a great race to a British lord who is running to win a wager, the tale blends these individuals into a team that keeps encouraging one another to continue.
