This book is the most winsome of the 4 Ive read; and that is saying something with Lorraine Heath starting off the series! Theres humor and pathos throughout this story.

Although this book can stand alone, you will miss most of the allusions to the other characters that are part of this grand series. Read them in order as listed below.

Venus Daltry is the most notorious flirt of the county and it is her 20th birthday. Grandma Minerva gives each grandchild a labor (of 1 years duration) to perform. The goal is to build character and this one is a hummer!

Venus pitches an unholy fit when she finds out she is to accompany an author across Texas to Nevada and act as his assistant. And she doesnt know hes blind yet!

Although she lives on a working ranch with her other siblings, Venus does not ride for fear of developing freckles and not being able to show her beauty off to the best advantage. She takes along morning and afternoon frocks and wears a corset and bustle! This is hardly a serious candidate for an assistant.

Venus isnt the only one who needs a new attitude because dime-novel author Sanford Buchanan is grumpy, seems totally uncultured and has a chip on his shoulder as wide as Texas. This is not a match made in heaven.

Each of the main characters has a lot to learn. However, Id like to share with you the most fascinating part of the whole book (to me): pages 222 - 223. Venus was a pitiful excuse for the eyes of Sanford because she wasnt interested in anything that didnt smack of dresses, perfumes and how adorable she was.

Finally in frustration, Sanford explains what it feels like to be blinded at the age of 13 and what he needs to hear from her. These are some of the most emotionally-wrenching words Ive read in a long time. As this is Rachelle Nelsons first novel, I am impressed with the quality of the whole book. But her work shines when she lets Sanford speak the dialog is dead-on!
