Winsor's tale of an ambitious country girl who claws and sleeps her way to the court of Charles II was an earthshaking scandal when it was published in the 1944, but seems pretty tame today. Still, Amber is a well-drawn character, and the background of court intrigue and natural disaster creates a fascinating tapestry.
