Now that Fictionwise is dead, does anyone have suggestions for a good discount site for paranormal, romance, dark fantasy, hot reads, etc?  I've looked at Books On Board, All Romance, Diesel, plus the individual publisher sites.  So far I'm underwhelmed.  Samhain discounts all new release 30% the first week of release, Ravenous Romance has buy 4 get the 5th free, All Romance has buy 10 get the 11th free, but that's about all I've found.  Thanks in advance for ideas.

One thing you can do is watch MobileRead's Freebies forums for deals.

Here.

BooksOnBoard has a sale once in a while. There's one now...

BooksOnBoard

BooksOnBoard keeps the great prices going this week with 40% Off after Promo Code happyprice good for 30% Off List Price Plus 10% Rewards Back on All Discount Eligible eBooks and Audio Books.

I think that anymore, only those who actually are publishers and not just ebook retailers have any regular sales. With everyone else it seems to come and go.

I've been buying some from Kobo.  Lately, they've had 40% off coupons.  Not sure if there's a current one.  Other than them, I buy from AllRomance.  I just haven't bought as many ebooks since Fictionwise went down.

I'd be sure to back up books from BoB.  From Dear Author:

Samhain Publishing discontinued a direct relationship with Books on Board over 18 months ago due to non-payment of money owed. However, our books continue to remain available to them via Ingram’s Lightning Source. It is obviously their choice as to which titles they would like to stock, so if you are unable to find a Samhain book listed for purchase with them, we invite you to purchase the title directly from us at store.samhainpublishing.com.

Thankfully I bought SO many books during all those fictionwise sales, I won't run out of material for a long time to come. I do occasionally buy books from Amazon, if they are lendable, and/or if I am ready to read it right away. No more stockpiling, though. There are some stores like Changeling Press that have good books, their sales aren't too good, though. Better than nothing, I guess.

Luckily, I did the same thing.

Too bad the Agency War decimated the membership and most of the discounts.

It didn't help that B&N pretty much ignored Fictionwise once they bought it.

When i looked at FW the other day I found that B&N is using the books listed on FW as links to their editions at B&N, boo on them!  B&N just couldn't stand the competition, I knew it was the death of FW the minute BN bought them.  I too bought many, many, books at FW over the years, thank goodness but there are so many series I wanted to complete.  FW really spoiled me with their discounts.

At least some of the prices have come down. I just bought A Perfect Darkness by Jaime Rush, which is a Harper Collins book. No WAY would I have paid the list price of $6.99 but I didn't think $4.74 was a bad price so I bought it. First book in the series, never read her before, I wouldn't pay full price for a book like that.

Of course they are. They're shutting FW down. They want FW customers to go to B&N. Why else would they have spent 15 million buying it?

B&N never intended FW to survive past purchase. But they had contracts with Indy publishers that B&N didn't have at the time, so B&N left it running until they could do seperate deals with the Indy's at B&N. This was important because when the Agency War hit, it gave them access to selling books that ran cheaper than the Agency prices.

And when the Agnecy War hit, no one could do much about discounts and coupons. That wasn't all B&N's fault.

While I'm not a fan of B&N, I do think they could have shut down FW years ago, and left those who'd bought books hanging. A book store disapears, so does your book library. At least they left it open for a while and sold a lot of Indy books through it, and have transferred a lot of FW's books to the B&N Library. I would have lost hundred of books but they were transfered to B&N. (Well, not really lost. I have them all backed up.) Not only did they transfer them when they didn't have to, many of them turned out to be lendable as well.

So I'm kinda on the fence about B&N. They mostly suck, (Web site sucks big time) but do do some good things once in a while. No telling what would have happened if FW had sold out to anyone else.

Cindy, you're right. I have just been taking the easy way out and blaming BN for all of it.  Yes they could have shut FW down as soon as they purchased it but instead allowed to continue selling.  I just miss my FW, boo hoo!,

Being on a fixed income just makes it hard when looking at the pricing for ebooks and paper.  I don't know how people can manage these days with the pricing on everything so high not to mention the cost of ereaders, movies, books, etc.  Bravoes to all you budget managers who help your family make ends meet each month.

One word:

LIBRARY

I suggest signing up with any big city library in your state (that's how they tend to do this, if you haven't seen it locally...big cities can charter for membership of the entire state - and they have a bigger, better ebook library; I could have never been a regular member because it's too far to get & return real books)...it was a great resource for me!  And the librarian takes requests!  I saw many of my requests for both fiction and non-fiction filled.  And you can reborrow any time!  Not just once!

I also don't own an e-reader, though I've thought about.  I just use the free programs on my computer.  Double, triple, quadrouple duty works best on my budget, which is 1/2 as much as my mom on Social Security...so NOT MUCH! And I've got 2 people on that 1/2!

As mentioned, libraries loan ebooks now.

Amazon offers a lot of freebies. Since December 2010, anywhere from 300 to 1300 freebies a day. (True, a lot of it porn on some days, but some established authors also have given books away from time to time.)

So it can pay to get an Amazon account even if you don't have a Kindle. Just purchase all the freebies you want, and then you can use Kindle4PC and read on your laptop, or download the book to any Kindle app.

And any of those that aren't DRM'd can be converted to other fromats with Calibre. (A free ebook database program.) If you want to break DRM, there's ways to do that as well. Then you can put them all on the device of your choice.

If you're willing to read outside the "Mainstream" author group, (which means from any of the major publishers) you'll find freebies at the Indy sites, and cheap prices there, in open formats. Smashwords lets authors give away codes to put into the shopping cart when a book is purchased to discount the book or make it free. So you want to look for author codes there.

There's thousands of free and really cheap books out there. You just need to dig to find them.

I also use my libray to get ebooks.  Would the books they have always be my absolute first choice in reading material?  Not necessarily.  But I've broadened my reading horizons, and sometimes I'll try a book because I need one and it's available.   But if your library offers Overdrive ebooks and you haven't looked to see what they offer, I highly recommend it.

I also have a Kindle and subscribe to 3 threads that list Kindle freebies daily.  Some are just terrible and I pretty much delete it within trying to read the first chapter, but I also have read some great books.  The people that post on the threads are super helpful in feedback about what's good & what's not.

Lastly, I've been tossing around the idea of joining the Philadelphia Free Library.  They have tons of ebooks available.  They let out of state residents join for $35 per year.  If I checked out 3 per month, that's $1 per book, and I'm sure I would check out more than that.  Have too much on my ebook TBR pile to join yet, but I'm still thinking about it......

Allromance has a 50% rebate today on ebooks.  Remember, you get it in thier ebucks and can not split payments between multiple sources so plan your purchases carefully.
