This book has three key characters two of which are Jill Banford and Nellie March who live on a farm working to support themselves but their efforts are meager at best. Their knowledge of farming and raising animals is so limited that they fail in most efforts, finally resolving to raise only chickens which a fox begins to steal.

The setting is Berkshire, England, during World War I. Enter Henry, recently a soldier, who views the situation as an opportunity and seeks to marry one of the two. At first the women welcome the young man whose conversation and actions brighten their day until Henry begins to focus on March. Obviously, Henry is the fox and Banford begins to recognize the threat he poses to the two women and their relationshp. The plot continues with Henry marrying March after Banford's death.

My first read by this author, I enjoyed the characterization, the writing and the interaction among the characters. It's a quick read and very well done.
