TOR's newest publicity push involves sending out a free e-book every week. Some of the books are really excellent--including this week's book, In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker. In the Garden of Iden is the first book in Kage Baker's brilliant The Company series, which I suspect may be one of the greatest works of science fiction ever written. It's smart and clever and sly. While this volume is merely very very good, the series as a whole is brilliant. This book is an excellent, exceedingly entertaining novel on it's own merit. But when you start to read the rest of the books in the series, you discover that Iden is only the tip of a very carefully planned, complex, and absolutely fascinating iceberg, in which Kage Baker has planned out every detail with incredible perfection. It's like a gorgeous million-piece jigsaw puzzle, where all the pieces magically fall into place and you can't stop marvelling at how brilliant it is. I love these books like that. And now you have a chance to read the first one, starring the excellent Botanist Mendoza, for free, right here on the internet. In the Garden of Iden, this week's book can be accessed here: http://hbpub.vo.llnwd.net/o16/video/olmk/tor.com/BakerITGOIHTML/Baker,%20Kage%20-%20In%20the%20Garden%20of%20Iden.html And you can sign up to get the TOR newsletter (comes once a week only, with a link to a free ebook in html, pdf and mobi form) here: http://www.tor.com/ Happy reading!
