This volume covers the period extending roughly from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the 1850s. It begins with an attempt to look closely at the concent of "Romanticism" itself, and continues by exploring literary, philosophical, and social manifestations of the movement and the consequences of the Romantic attitude for social theory and historical scholarship. Separate chapters have been devoted to Hugo, Stendahl, and Balzac, and to Nerval and Baudelaire. As with the other volumes in the series, chronological tables provide cross-references to major names and events in history, painting, music and ideas, as well as listing representative works in French, English, and German literature.« less
