Although Hölderlin and Mörike differ significantly aas poets, both were heirs and transformers of the spiritual and cultural traditions of their home region, Swabia. Further, despite the fact that each poet achieved that transformation in a different way, both were geniuses of the lyric, and both had strong visionary traits. The translator, himself a poet, has had special success with the syntactical complexities of Hölderlin's poetry and the lighter, eloquent ironies of Mörike's. The Hölderlin translations differ significantly from existing ones; existing Mörike translations are few in number. This volume will open the work of both poets to a wider public, for study and for pleasure.« less
