Short of searching randomly, I wondered if there was a friend-matching system in place, or plans to put one in place?  I know you can see on individual pages how much (in percentage) you have in common with someone, but what about friend suggestions based on your wish list or read list, etc.?  I tend to lean into the more esoteric stuff, and that puts me squarely in a category that's not very big.

Not sure, but that would be a cool idea.

I look in a forum on a topic I like. Or in Hidden Gems. Lots of interesting book discussions there.

Hi Erin and welcome!

I've found friends by trading books with people who have read/want to read the same books; in other words people to whom I've mailed books and people from whom I've ordered books.  Not a fast process and it doesn't always work, of course, as a fellow-trader's taste in books can change & that's why s/he's trading away the book or s/he could be swapping a partner's book they've never read, or whatever. But, it's a place to start if the wishlists/bookshelves of your trading partners is compatible.

There are also many book-trading 'games' being played at any one time, too.  Especially if you're interested in any genre fiction, you'll meet a ton of players in the games that will become friends and future trading partners.

You found the Forums eons earlier in your membership than I did, so I think you're on the right track.  Happy swapping!
