Anyone read this yet? I have questions and would like to discuss so this thread may contain spoilers.  My big question is: what exactly was the ball he dug up? I've figured out (I think) who's grave it was, but what was the object?

Frostfire  by Lynn Viehl [Kyndred, Bk 3]

No one?? I've been searching through other discussion lists and book reviews but no luck yet.  So some of you who plan to read this book, can you watch for this question and maybe you'll see something I missed?

Just picked it up at the library.  I'm watching this topic so I remember to come back and answer your question in case no one else got to it.

That would be great. It's right at the beginning, page 5 when he "plunged his hand into the hole that he'd made and wrestled an odd shaped ball from it...".

I suppose they could have been referring to a skull, but I it didn't seem like he really dug that far into the grave - just below the marker/plaque.

The significance of the grave comes out much later, towards the end when you learn his true history.  I don't think it's a spoiler to say the grave was of someone important to him. Once you know his past, the identity of the grave isn't much of a leap.

SPOILER!!!

If someone has read your first post then they know what this is about so I think it's ok to talk specifics.

I just finished it and I agree.  Reading page 293 leads me to believe it's Marian's skull. I went back to view the date and place of when he dug up the hole with the "odd shaped ball" and compared it to the time and place he described on page 293 and it's gotta be her skull.

Let me go on about how frustrating I was with how this was written.  It was quite confusing for me but I'm glad to see that Samuel Taske's story is in the next book!

Thanks for checking back. I thought it was something more mysterious than her skull, but I agree it's a likely enough assumption.

Yes, I found this book pretty frustrating as well. And it didn't help that once the twists and turns finally got to the final disclosure of the main character's identity, it had been so long (and so many books) ago that I only vaguely remembered who he was and his history. So the impact of the big revelation was rather dulled.
