This was a story of a young woman's coming of age in the turbulent 50s and 60s. She grows up in New York and moves to the racially divided South for college. There she sees firsthand the first steps of the civil rights movement, the beginning of women's liberation and the sexual revolution. Angered by the inequalities she decides to study law, much to the chagrin of her mother who wants to see her married in the suburbs. I liked this book a lot because the main character, Tana, is an intelligent, independent young woman determined to make a difference in a challenging world.
