I would never give away this book except we accidentally got two copies!!

Asa doesn't know wht to expect when his mother tells him it's time he made his first full hand. After all, he's onl nine years old. But his father, the Captain, needs some hlep. He carries coal over the canal on his boat all the way across New Jersey, and his mule tender uas quit. he needs someone to drive the two mules who pull the boat. Today that someone has to be Asa.

Asa works with his fateher as they pick up their cargo at the coal chutes and continue along the canal to deliver it. On the way, he learans abut canal boats and locks, aqueducts and inclined planes, and most of all, how to handle the mules. But when a violent storm threatens the mission, Asa finds out what it really means to make a full hand.
