Budgetary constraints and a suffering economy do not offer much hope for growth in actual training; therefore, an ongoing need to provide training materials which will enhance and accelerate the learning process at either a self-paced level or with some instructional assistance will continue to grow. After participating in numerous seminars for both experienced and new importers and providing training for new employees, it became clear that there were few options available for people who wanted to learn about the process of importing. Thus, the idea for this book was born. One of the primary goals of this book is to provide the reader with the requirements that an importer must satisfy to comply with U.S. Custom¿s laws and regulations. The book was structured to be used either in a classroom setting or as a self-study for employees of importers or brokers and for anyone interested in learning about the import process. The book was written in a conversational style in order to appeal to people who are not accustomed to the complex legalistic style that is used in a number of the government publications normally found in this industry. There are very few publications that provide this level of content. In a day when many employees lack the basic skills that we take for granted, this book provides an easy-to-understand explanation of a complicated subject. One of the most frequent complaints received is that the materials currently out on the market require a law degree to translate the complex rules and regulations. One of the methods that help people learn is to make difficult materials easier to understand and to provide useful examples. This book was designed to encompass the majority of import-related topics in enough depth to satisfy the new and somewhat experienced person who is interested in learning about imports. It takes time to learn the business of importing. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. It is important for the importer, broker and other parties to understand the rules of the business and the consequences of breaking them. Just as the importing process changes, the government regulations and processes change. It is imperative to stay abreast of changes and make certain that the information is correct. These materials are designed to accelerate the learning process and provide ongoing reference materials. Since importers must deal with complex government regulations, which are difficult for even the most experienced individuals to understand, this book provides easy-to-understand explanations of these regulations. The book is designed to take the reader on a journey from the beginning of the process to the end in a logical manner. Approximately 550 pages long, this book contains 21 chapters, with each chapter providing numerous examples, explanations of various forms, references to web sites and a set of questions to test the readers understanding of the materials presented. This book is a necessity for importers, customhouse brokers and students of international trade.
