This well research tale is not about the discovery of the Northwest Passage, but about the search for it that leads to officers and crew being stranded for four years among the Innuit. Despite the ignorance and arrogance usually characteristic of European explorers, Ross forms a bond with the Innuit and adapts to their life. So we see what life among the Innuit was like before it was changed by European contact and the exploitation of wildlife in the north. If you are intrigued by the efforts of Shackleton and Franklin, you will enjoy this book.
