The final third of the trilogy begun by THE PASSING BELLS takes the aristocratic Greville family from 1930 to the commencement of the Second World War. Much more serious in tone than the first two books - I mean serious in the sense that romance is kept at a minimum and the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism (including English Fascism) are explored more thoroughly. Martin Rilke remains the strongest character study. A good read, if sometimes a little draggy.
