This is merely another mediocre novel set during the Jacobite attempt to return the Pretender to the throne of England. For others, refer to the early novels of John Buchan; although Buchan sticks more closely to historical events. The plot is nothing out of the ordinary, but is reminiscent of many other novels of this period: dual identity, treason, turncoats, misplaced betrothal, sympathy for a cause. Some cause: the attempt to unseat a usurper by another supposed usurper. Anyway, Bonnie Prince Chucky barely figures into this romance. Oh yes, there is also another recount of the hero being hanged for the requisite 15 minutes only to be reanimated by a lest than reputable physician (in other words by ne who employs body snatchers). I recall this from another novel; I wish I could remember which. While not a noteworthy novel, if you enjoy Sabatini you may still want to read this one.
