Bernd Heinrich signed this copy. I bought the book at his exhibit of nature drawings at a natural history museum in Hinkley,Maine. Wonderful read. Made me want to go for a long walk into the woods.

The story, the observations and the drawings are vintage Heinrich. His university students are lucky to have him.
The rest of us can read the books. Or go out and listen and observe and keep field notes and sketches just like he does.
It's a good read and a good call to kids of all ages to get out into nature and learn directly from our fellow planetary citizens.
I know I'll look at individual geese, and most other bird, a lot more closely from now on (and indulge in some better binocs).

An excellent natural history, both poetically evocative and scientifically accurate. I'm only getting rid of the paperback because I was also gifted with the hardcover!

A genre-crossing enterprise, this book is part field diary and part cute-animal story. The author behaves as a field biologist, but is obviously smitten with the geese which inhabit his pond. I learned much about the behavior of geese, some of which could be extrapolated to other types of birds.
