This book is a collection of 29 scientific papers presented at a conference sponsored by March of Dimes. Although old (hehehe, an old book on age), I found the papers to be useful background information on how the current theories of how and why we age have been assembled. The book is comprised of technical papers, but I found them very straightforward and easy to read even though I didn't have any background in this field. Anyone with an interest in biology, aging, and health would enjoy the information in this book. What I found most interesting were the papers that relate changes in ageing to such diseases as arthritis and diabetes. As there is no publishers description and the contents are not on the internet, I am going to detail the book. It is divided into five sections as follows:
1: Aging at the Level of the Whole Individual
..The papers in this section are:
...Genetic Syndromes in Man With Potential Relevance to the Pathology of Aging (GM Martin)
...Review of Disease Patterns and Life Span in Aging Mice: Genetic and Environmental Interactions (DD Myers)
...Effect of Aging and Radiation in Mice of Different Genotypes (JB Storer)
...Longevity, Aging and Comparative Cellular and Molecular Biology of the House Mouse, Mus musculus, and the White-Footed Mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (GA Sacher and RW Hart)
...Phylogenic and Immunogenetic Aspects of Aging (WH Hildemann)
...The Interaction of Genotype and Environment in the Determination of Avoidance Behavior of Aging Inbred Mice (RL Sprott)
...Some Contributions of Genetic Selection to the Study of Hypertenstion and Behavior Over the Life Span: Methodologic Considerations and Useful Future Directions (MF Elias)
.....
2: Aging at the Cellular Level
..The papers in this section are:
...In Vivo Versus In Vitro Cellular Aging (EL Schneider)
...Use of Isolated Parenchymal and nonparenchymal Liver Cells for Studies on the Mechanisms of Aging (DL Knook)
...Erythrocyte Life Span in Alpha Thalassemic Mice (RA Popp, MC Francis, and BS Bradshaw)
...Genetically Defined Animals Valuable in testing Aging of Erythroid and Lymphoid Stem Cells and Microenvironments (DE Harrison)
...Mechanism, Prevention, and Restoration of Immunologic Aging (T Makinodan)
...Immunologic Aging Patterns: Effects of Parainfluenza Type I Virus Infection on Aging Mice of Eight Strains and Hybrids (MMB Kay)
...Changing Secretion Patterns of Background Plaque-Forming Cells as a Function of Age (I Rappaport)
...Genetic Control of Autoimmune Disease and Immune Responsiveness and the Relationship to Aging (LJ Greenberg and EJ Yunis)
...Use of Congenic Mice to Study the Genetic Basis of Degenerative Disease (DM Popp)
...Influence of the H-2 and H-1 Histocompatability Systems upon Life Span and Spontaneous Cancer Incidences in Congenic Mice (GS Smith and RL Walford)
.....
