As the Japanese military invades 1940s Manchuria a young girl approaches her own sexual coming-of-age. Drawn into a complex triangle with 2 boys whe distracts herself with the game of go ina a public square. unbeknownst to her, the most worthy opponent is a Japanese soldier in disguise. captivated by her the soldier finds his loyalties challenged.

Beautiful book that presents a wonderful side-by-side comparison of Chinese and Japanese cultures. A much richer book than I initially expected and one that I recommend to anyone interested in either of these cultures or this time period in general.
