This is a quick read but if the reader isn't careful to pay close attention they will quickly lose their way. The plot is full of intricate turns and twists that leave the reader unsure of who is friend and who is foe. By the end of the story the mess is untangled but it seems like a wild goose chase up till then. It gets a 4 out of 5.

A man involved in small-town politics gets mixed up in a murder and some shady dealings. The plot of this book isn't anything special, but Hammet's writing style is. This is vintage 1930's noir and it's the real thing. Not the stuff they're pumping out now that is a parody of the real thing, almost. This is a great read!
