I was drawn to this book because I have always been interested in England between the wars, when the Bright Young Things were a thing. So I was disappointed with this book because there isn't much about that group in it and what there is makes them kind of the Dull Young Things. The main story concerns the child Alice, who is separated from her mother Selina (one of those Bright Young Things), misses her cruelly, but isn't told the truth about why Selina is gone. That part is touching. The rest of it didn't impress me.

For those interested in the Bright Young Thing era, I would recommend Evelyn Waugh's novels and the movie Bright Young Things (2003).
