Excerpt: CHAPTER III THE WOMEN VOLUNTEER A Week later, on February 4th, the day following the dismissal of the German Ambassador by the United States, the officers of the League and members of the Organization Committee met in New York City. It was apparent that from now on every moment must be made to count. The crisis had come; and while organization had gone forward at an astonishing rate, the fact remained that if war were immediately declared no detachments or groups of trained women were prepared to respond to an emergency call. Accordingly, for this meeting, Miss Parker arranged from the war service programme, an emergency service programme which included the activities for which the demand would be immediate. These divisions were: Social and Welfare (including Canteen, which later became a separate division) Home Economics Agriculture Industry Motor Driving General Service Home and Overseas Relief Within a few days the information blank for organizations desiring to co-operate with the League and a registration blank for individual members were ready. Questions embodied in the information blank requested complete data as to total membership of the co-operating organization, specialized training of its members, and the extent to which they desired to serve.
