Nameless, KY in the 1960's. There are so many heartrending stories in this book. Poverty, oppression of women, racial tensions. RubyLynn is being raised by her Uncle Gunnar after her parents die. He is a strict, religious man determined to keep her safe and "in line" while they farm his tobacco fields. Love, loss, fear, despair and faith - all combine to make this a memorable read.
