An excellent account of Schliemann story and his explorations in Asia minor and Greece and his eventual discovery and excavation of the site of ancient Troy.

Far be it from me to cast doubts on the advertising copy on the back of a book, but Troy was far from the richest or the most exotic civilization in ancient history. But the story of Schliemann is interesting.

At a time when archeologists and historians were declaring Troy to be myth, Schliemann, an amateur archeologist armed only with the Iliad and Odyssey, set out to find it. And did. And changed everything we know or thought we knew about ancient Greece in the process.
