Loved it! Nice to see Gideon back in action, especially in a setting as fantastic as Italy. Naturally a relaxing trip turns into the opportunity to examine a few bones and interact with the wealthy, eccentric and possibly deadly locals. Definitely a book that can stand alone, but much more fun if you start at the beginning of the series.

I really enjoy Aaron Elkins mysteries--they are well-written, easy to read, and have humor as well as suspense. I think this is one of the best - it takes place around the Lake District of Italy and if you have traveled there you will enjoy his descriptions of the lakes and towns. there is just enough violence to keep the story suspenseful and always a little twist at the end.

I enjoyed this book. Gideon Oliver is NO Temperance Brennan but I still enjoyed it.
From the back of the book:
Soaking up the sun on their friends idyllic island in Lake Maggiore, Gideon and his wife soon learn that the breathtaking view and sumptuous food come at a price. The padrones only child has been kidnapped. And when nearby construction workers unearth human bones, Gideon agrees to identify them -- exposing some extraordinary deceptions at the dark heart of a highborn family

Not deep or radically thoughtful, but way better than average of its type.
