Good Company: A Study of Nyakyusa Age-Villages
Good Company A Study of Nyakyusa AgeVillages Author:Monica Wilson This is a study of Nyakyusa Age-villages in Southern Tangayika, where the social structure of the society is founded strictly upon age and generation without regard to familiar descendants. — This village system in Southern Tanganyika is thought to be unique. Each village consists, not of a group of kinspeople, as in most primitive societies, but... more » of an age-set -- a group of contemporaries -- together with their spouses and young children. The book is concerned with the structure of these villages and the values expressed in them.
Dr. Monica Wilson and her husband, anthropologist Godfrey Wilson, lived for some time among the Nyakyusa people, observing their unusual form of communal living. This analysis of the Nyakyusa way of life was written by Dr. Wilson after the death of her husband, when she assumed the position of Professor of Social Anthropology at Rhodes University college, in Grahamstown, South Africa.« less
