The acts of Aristides de Sousa Mendes deserve far greater than the writing of this book. I felt as though the author did a lot of research, found every tiny detail possible, then simply listed things in a reasonable order. Lists of his 14 children, where they were born, what they were named. Lists of relatives. Lists of places he served as an ambassador. The heart of it, the soul, was completely lacking. The narration portion of the book is 164 pages long, and the action doesn't start until the half-way point. In addition to the dry telling is a cast of thousands, each with their own list of details, until I was thoroughly confused who was who.

A good reference book but not a good one for curling up under a quilt for a good read. Which is a pity, because more people should know about this man.
