Grasshopper Author: Barbara Vine Writing under her Vine pseudonym, Ruth Rendell offers another intriguing psychological thriller. Clodagh Brown is telling tales from her childhood adventures and her love of heights. Indeed, as a teenager, she survived a tragic accident that killed her first love when they went climbing pylons, whose steel arms carried electricity across nearby fields. In college, she found classes boring but fell in with a group of roof climbers, who spent their evenings walking the roofs of London. The youthful idealists decided to help a couple being harassed by tabloids accusing them of kidnapping a child. This ill-fated attempt led to a terrifying climax, which is the heart of the book. Although readers know that Clodagh survives, the story is enthralling and ingenious. "...an ingenious story told by a master of suspense."
