A British police proceedural with a very human Det. Insp., interesting co-workers, a musician as his love interest. I've read most of this series and enjoyed all of them.

Detective Inspector Bill Slider is not in the best of moods. His girlfriend has dumped him, and his wife has left him for her bridge partner. Slider is an intelligent British cop. A conductor is gunned down at a music rehearsal, since his girlfriend is there, he is happy to take the case.

From Library Journal

If your mystery readers have yet to meet British Inspector Bill Slider and Company, it's time they do. Though readers may guess the murderer early on in this fourth in the series, his police cohorts, and his violinist love, Joanna, are among the most appealing cast in recent memory. Their relationships, the music world setting, and the clever dialog (with blessedly fewer puns than in previous works) recommend this to all collections. Start with the first in the series, Orchestrated Death.
