Great series by an excellent author. No fast read here, with it's complex and well-researched charecter studies. Especially interesting with it's geographical descriptions of New Orleans, in light of Hurricane Katrina.

Excellent tale of New Orleans shortly after Louisiana purchased by the United States. Ben Janvier (January) is a free man of color. His story, and that of his family, is interesting. He gets involved in a murder case due to his sister Olympe being one of the accused. Very interesting historical mystery.
