The house, she learns, once belonged to the Waring family who had been forced to move when their land was needed for the reservoir. Sally finds the still-warm ashes of a fire near the old well, but it isn't until they hear that the Waring boy has disappeared that Rob joins forces with Sally to try to solve the mystery.
Throughout that wonderful summer in the Catskills, the Foster family have fun and good times together, and Sally and Bob learn something about the work involved in building a great city's water supply.
