I like this genre a lot, but I'm also willing to admit that so many books start to sound alike. Here's a new one that's original, creative and smart! Title: "The Rook," sort of a combo of Bourne Identity and Monty Python. The plot involves a secret group with amazing paranormal powers, secretly organized by the British gov. to battle (and keep secret) attacks from other beings with paranormal powers. It's extremely well-written, AND it's really clever. Not the same-ole same-ole cutesy romance with a sassy para. chick (altho strong young women do play major roles). The characters are original creatures, too. When I read the book jacket, it didn't do much for me. I thought it just did not sound that interesting. But it really is, in a field where intelligent wit and creativity, something beyond YA level, is hard to find. |
