This book is by my favorite journalist, a man who tells us what he sees and hears (and he has been everywhere and speaks fluent Arabic and I think some Farsi) and doesn't mind if it's not PC. I am only halfway through, but already I can tell that it is a winner. Don't let the length put you off. The chapters are pretty much independent and you can put aside the book while you're reading others. His book on Lebanon (Pity the Nation) is also a Loooong winner.
