Here's a link to the goodreads page on it. Truly a forgotten classic. People, if they remember anything, remember the movie (Lana Turner), but not the novel. The writing itself is a pleasure, and the story (historical novel, 1830's British Empire) is compelling, and involves loveable people so imperfect and sometimes stupid that they're perfectly believable. At times I thought I was reading Dickens - particularly the dry character descriptions. She so perfectly describes a character is his or her own voice, but "unwittingly" letting their foibles shine through and through. It's hard to find a copy, but if you seek it out, you won't regret it. |

Elizabeth Goudge is one of my favorite authors! I have not read Green Dolphin Street yet, but I intend to! My favorites by her are The Little White Horse (a children's book) and Pilgrim's Inn. |

very mixed reviews on amazon. some like it. some are bored. The book has 27 5-star reviews, 4 4-star reviews, 1 3-star, 1 2-star, and 3 1-star. That's pretty great, I think. |
