Has anyone read this? I put this on my wish list not really knowing what it was about. I am drawn to off the wall titles and historical fiction :) It was an absolutely wonderful story. It takes places right after WWII. The book is in the form of letters written between characters. A writer gets a letter from a man on the island of Guernsey. They develop a friendship and the story of how Guernsey survived the German occupation unfolds. It brought me to tears a couple of times. They authors must have really researched what the occupation was like. It seems very real. I sat with it tonight intent on reading a few pages and I ended up knocking off the final 60. |

I finished this book the other day and it was one of those that just leaves you with a good feeling. One thing funny..it is written about the period after WWII, and it takes on the style of writing that many authors of the day used, the main character is such a typical 40's heroine, cheerful, wholesome, pretty. I got so caught up in the book that when one of the characters states that another character is "a homosexual", I was surprised for a minute, thinking that it had to be kind of controversial and risque to be mentioning that so openly in a book of that period...they usually just insinuated or hinted about people's sexuality. Then I remembered that the book actually was written in 2008! |
