Constructed by George Washington Vanderbilt in 1895, when he was 33 years old, this is a self-sustaining landmark through the efforts of his daughter and two grandsons. Frederick Law Olmsted and Richard Morris Hunt's work can be appreciated here. This is the largest private residence in the USA and the tourist trade contributes to Asheville's economy.
Well laid out from the Tapestry Room to the Laundry Room, the text is informative. No index but there is a list by room the furniture, etc. listed.
