This is not some dry non-fiction academic read. Writing is compelling. The large amount of research is well edited and clearly organized.

Very accessible to the average reader not already familiar with the Soviet Union. A must read for anybody interested in history of Russia, Soviet Union, communism, European history from WWI through death of Stalin. Section on popular uprisings against oppressive system reminds me of current events in middle east.
