Another historical that could be classified as a "classic". Lila seduces Bishop McKenzie at her brother's wedding and turns up pregnant. Her new sister-in-law writes to Bishop with the news and he returns just in time to stop Lila from marrying another man.

She glanced up, her eyes meeting Bishop's. "I wish you'd arrived too late," she said, her voice more weary than angry. "If I'd already been Logan's wife, there would have been nothing you could do to change things."

Bishop smiled down at her, his eyes pale blue and cold as ice. "I could have made you a widow."

Passion, anger, death and danger all combine to make these two realize they are meant for each other.

This story starts with a bang; a Pennsylvania wedding comes to an abrupt halt by Bishop Macke zie. He claims to be the father of Lila Adam's unborn child. Lila was standing in front of the minister with an old family friend (whom she did not love -- to avoid a scandal regarding her pregnancy). Lila had a single night of passion with Bishop Mackenzie after her brother's wedding. Mackenzie left soon after, but Susan (Lila's new sister-in-law) wrote to Bishop about Lila's pregnancy.

Lila and Bishop spend the first several months adjusting to the changes in their lives. There are many changes; this is not easy because Bishop was previously married to a woman with little spirit, and Lila has it in spades. First, they travel to St. Louis, where Bishop finds his two children unhappy with their grandparents (the deceased mother's parents). So he presents his 5-year-old daughter, Angel, and his twelve-year-old son to Lila as his family. Lila is shocked but responds rather well to the children. Lila has a great deal of gumption; watching her grow into a nurturing mother to the two needy children is a treat.

The four travel to Paris, Colorado; Bishop is the local sheriff. This novel is a page-turner. It is easy to get involved in the pursuits of the four as they grow into a family in this rough town. Bishop has always kept his own counsel, and he finds it difficult to react to outgoing and accomplished Lila. However, the reader sees inside Bishop when his son Gavin decides he wants to be a shootist, just like his dad. Overall score = VG+.
