The rules say that if you specify in your own profile that hardcover books MUST have the original dust jacket/cover, then they must. Yet if you receive a hardcover book that does not have the dust jacket, there is no option to mark for that if you want to mark the book as 'received but with a problem.' So I don't know what to do in that situation.

You don't put that in your profile.  You must set up Requestor's Conditions (RC) on your account.  If you didn't do that, then you must mark it received with no problem.  If you have the RC set up on the account, then you would have an option to mark it RWAP due to not meeting the RC.  Here is how to set them up:

 

Requestor Conditions allow you to specify what kinds of books you are NOT willing to receive from other members.   The specifications you write will appear verbatim on every request you submit.  You can set your Requestor Conditions in your Account Settings, from the Settings tab in My Account.

To apply Requestor Conditions to your account:

  • Go to your Account Settings:

    • Place your cursor over My Account in the toolbar at the top of the site, and choose Settings from the menu that drops down.
    • Or, from My Account, click the Settings tab on the far right.
  • In your Account Settings:
    • Click the link "Requestor Conditions" at the top of the page
      • Or, just scroll down to see this area.
    • Choose "Yes" from the dropdown menu at the top of the Requestor Conditions text box
      • Choosing "No" will preserve your settings but not make them active--they will not be shown on a request if you choose No.
    • Type your text into the text box:
      • Please be very clear
      • Your conditions should be easily interpretable and should NOT require (or ask for!) further clarification in Personal Messages.   If a sender is confused, she or he may decline your request.  The sender will NOT be able to contact you before accepting the book, so the RC text should be clear.
  • Click "update request settings"

Hi James --

Not sure what rules you're referring to. Below is an excerpt from the Help Documents regarding book condition criteria for PBS "swappability" which state that you must set up an RC if you require the dust jacket. Kellie has provided directions for doing so. If you did set up an RC and the sender didn't follow it, then you can certainly mark the book Received With a Problem. Hope this clears up your confusion.

Dust Jacket:

  • The DUST JACKET (this is not the same as the cover of a book) does not have to be included with a book at all, unless the requestor had this in their Requestor Conditions. 
  • So DUST JACKET condition cannot be considered as part of the condition of a book, unless there were Requestor Conditions on the request specifying that the dust jacket be included.
  • If the Dust Jacket was to be included as specified in the Requestor Conditions on the request, the Dust Jacket must meet the same conditions as defined for the cover, below.

People don't look at your profile when you request a book from them.  Most don't even look at the profile of the person sending them a book.  So if you want books with dust jackets, you need set up an RC requiring one.

I am confused because you do not even have a profile set up and as Mary has said, members don't see your profile when requesting books. You would only be given the option of marking a book as not meeting your request if you have an RC set up and in place when you requested the book that you feels violated your request.

Also - make sure if you've typed up a Requester Condition that you have toggled the drop down box on it to YES and then clicked the Update box below so that the RCs take effect. If you don't do those two steps, the RC might be there in your settings, but not be applied to your requests.

btw: When you are asking for a dust jacket, make sure to use that word, most people see the word cover and think of the actual cover of the book, not the jacket around it,

When you request a book, you can tell your RCs have been applied because there is a button on the transaction that you can click and see what the RCs were. When you receive that book, if it did not meet your RC you will click on Problem and then you should have the option of Reqester Condition Not Met if the RC was active.

Good greif. I thought it was pretty obvious that when I said "profile" I meant "requestor conditions".

I have a RC set up and it is set up with "YES". I still don't have an option for the book in question to mark it as having not met my conditons.

Before you ask...it was set up this way BEFORE the book was sent, not after.

Unfortunately the word profile means something specific here so when you said profile they took you at your word literally. No one in the forums can actually see anything in your account so it takes questions to figure things out and sometimes people do put stuff in weird places they shouldn't and think it works - the Profile is a favorite spot for people to put things and expect people to see it before requesting books from them.

The receiving process is in a transition period it seems, but as it is right now - when you go to the book on your Enroute to Me Tab and click Problem on the book in question you should see a drop down menu appear to the right. When you click on that, Requester Conditions Not Met should be the 3rd option in the list under the Sender and USPS Damaged. If it is not there, toggle the transaction back to not received yet and send in Feedback. You do that via the Contact Us link in the lower right under Company. The Team can look at the transaction and can tell if a glitch caused the RCs to not appear and therefore the option to not be available.

Before you ask...it was set up this way BEFORE the book was sent, not after.

The RC has to be on when you request the book.  If you request the book, and then turn it on, even if it's before the book was sent, the sender won't see it.

You can check to see if the RC was attached to your request by going to your credit registry (or your transactions archive, if the book has been marked received) and clicking to see the request details. For anyone who is new here, the credit registry and transactions archive are both on the horizontal yellow bar on the My Account main page.

James, did you by any chance have the book sent to an alternate address?  I think that is one case where there is no option to mark a book RWAP.
