  • You will not be able to change booktype using the Edit Book Data Link.

    • The reason is that publishers sometimes use the same ISBN for more than one booktype
    • The booktype attached to the ISBN on PBS is the only booktype that can be Posted with this ISBN
    • In other words, if an ISBN is listed as hardcover on PBS (but the publisher used that ISBN for both hardcover and paperback).  If members could change the booktype:
      • members could Post their hardcovers with this ISBN correctly
      • and then someone who had the softcover changes the booktype on the listing for the ISBN
      • now all the members who have posted the book correctly have had their listings changed.
    • If you think the booktype on an ISBN is incorrect, you can submit this information to us in afeedback message.

Since there are 25 copies posted into the system, it is doubtful they would change the binding. If you could research and find pretty strong proof that the book was never printed as a hardcover under an ISBN they will sometimes change it, but usually not if there are a lot of posted copies that would be affected.

When I enter the ISBN on my paperback, the listing shows a hardcover!

Problem: You enter the ISBN on your paperback and the book Listing Preview says "hardcover".

This means one of two things:

1.  Your book is an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)

If your book is a paperback, and the ISBN brings up a Book Listing Preview that says "hardcover", please check your book to be sure it is not an ARC.   If it is an ARC, it cannot be Posted for swapping at PBS.

Solution: You can offer this book to others in the Book Bazaar Discussion Forum, but you cannot Post it to your PBS bookshelf.

2. The publisher chose to assign the same ISBN to more than one version of this title.

Publishers sometime choose to assign the same ISBN to multiple versions of a book.  However, PBS can attach only ONE booktype to the listing for an ISBN.  If your book does not have the booktype assigned to the ISBN in the PBS database, you will need to post it with a customized listing, using the Post a Book Without an ISBN link on the Post Books page, so that the booktype matches your book.

Solution: You will need to post this book with a customized listing for the book, using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page.

An ISBN search shows both paperbacks and hardcovers posted elsewhere with this ISBN.

So the site has to assume that the books currently posted to this listed are hardcovers, too, and they can't change the binding.  But you can post your book without using the ISBN.  There's a place for that on the Post Books page.

"I'd like to add: Thank you for checking the book and removing it. It is frustrating to order one book and get another binding type. We all appreciate members that post their books correctly."
